Japanese Kokeshi dolls were the inspiration for Momiji. It is believed that Kokeshi were first made in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867) in northeast Japan. The area of Japan were for its hot springs and spas sold in the Kokeshi for visitors to return is known as a gift.
